There is a general debate in society over the topic of tourists’ duty to preserve the hosting region’s cultural and environmental status quo. Although some assert being a “responsible tourist” is idealistic, I am firmly convinced that travelers’ consciousness for the local circumstances can be boosted through the following instruments.
First of all, imposing government regulation is an effective measure to deter immoral behaviors from the visitor. Such regulation may involve specific penalty to a corresponding level of destruction caused by the travelers, which is widely used in conserving historical heritage and scarce biota. For example, in Singapore, it was “Chewing Gum Law” that published in 1992 to forbid chewing gums in Singapore, as its non-degradable nature, if not disposed properly, may not only put a strain on the urban sanitation, but also increase the risk for wild animals, like pigeons, to swallow by accident. And the offenders will incur stringent punishments up to imprisonment. In this way, travelers are demanded to become obligatory for the local environment and culture as well as for themselves.
Apart from the direct legislation imposed by the authoritative organizations, displaying frequent traveling advice also plays a significant role. Perhaps, the so called “irresponsible tourists” were merely fail to be informed with the consequences of not maintaining the native culture and environment during a journey. At this moment, it is traveling advice that can advocate the importance of cilvil tourist on sustaining indigenous features while setting up a higher moral benchmark for the entire tourism industry. Take persuasive advertisement for instance, a common allocation of traveling advices, in which the contents may instruct travelers to meet the local traveling standard in a creative approach. It facilitates the protection for the folk culture and environment and raises the intrinsic sense of responsibility in every traveler.
To sum up, though of challenge the object on achieving the complete cultural and environmental preserving habit for all tourists, I am optimistic about the foreseeable enhancement in cultivating accountable tourists when the appropriate administrations and propagandas are applied.
