In the modern society, where interpersonal communications become more frequent, friendship plays an irreplaceable role in one’s life. As individuals, we can make friends at any stage of our life. Some people hold the view that keeping old friends outweighs making new friends. From my perspective, I am opposed to the statement.

There is no doubt that old friends accompany us longer and exert profound influence on us. That is, old friends know our personalities better and we have real trust in them. In times of happiness, old friends are there to share our joy while in times of depression, old friends are there to listen and comfort. Furthermore, old friends offer us practical advice in the face of difficulty. As a famous saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed. Old friends are those we turn help to when we are dealing with specific problems.

Also, we cannot ignore the importance of new friends. To be concrete, new friends help us fit into an unfamiliar studying or working environment. If we come to a new company, it is uneasy for us to complete tasks when there are just strangers around us. And if we are at school, making new friends helps us adapt quickly in learning, sports, and psychological aspects. What’s more, making new friends helps broaden our social network. Once you make friends with someone, you will make friends of a friend’s, and repeatedly, you will have circles of friends in the end.

In conclusion, old friends offer emotional comfort and practical help, and new friends allow us to fit into a new environment and broaden our social circle. Therefore, it is fair to say that keeping old friends and making new friends are both equally important, given that different friends play different roles in each stage of one’s life.
