It is sometimes argued that we ought to demolish old buildings and construct new ones, because vast amounts of money has been spent on the old building’s preservation. I extremely agree with this idea, while some buildings deserve further protection.

One reason is that repairing old buildings is a waste of money. With the development of urbanization, an increasing number of people tend to live around the center of the city, and old houses, especially those near the suburb, gradually become empty. As a result of no people living in the old buildings as well as their little business value, it is economically sensible to knock down these old buildings instead of maintaining them. Otherwise, the worth of taking money to build new ones like entertainment facilities will far outweigh that of refurbishing them.

Another demerit is old buildings will hinder the city’s development. The traffic routes tend to be more complicated with the larger urban space nowadays. Old buildings have existed for a long time, and they are unable to suit modern traffic planning like subway route plans and the new flight route regulations. So, it is no need to retain them, and we should knock down them to facilitate the formation of new traffic system in scale city.

On the other hand, certain types of old buildings need money to be protected on account of their cultural significance. Culture sometimes is a symbol of the spirit of a nation. The preservation of old construction with great art means that people can maintain related historical material for research, which can enrich nations’ culture.

In sum, some old buildings with little value or blocking the process of cities should be replaced by new ones, while certain types of old constructions with historical meaning need further preservation.
