A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college.

Each year, educators spend a lot of work on developing a better education system in order to provide a better curriculum for students in the nation. However, it is argued whether the same curriculum is necessary for students before college. I agree apart with the status, but students that are talented or enabled should be allowed to learn in a different system.

Most students need to learn basic knowledge, which is the core value of compulsory education. For example, subjects such as math and language no matter what their career will be in the future. Math courses train students’ logical thinking ability, and language courses increase students’ communication skills. In addition, the same curriculum in the nation is a benefit to all citizens in the country. Whenever a student moved to another city during high school, there will be a problem if the curriculum is different. Also when all these students from different cities gather in the same university, it is hard for teachers if some students had learned the subject before but some do not. In the long term, having the same curriculum diminishes the gap between urban and rural. Students in rural have a fair chance to compete with urban students, and can also develop their home town by knowledge.

Some may claim that students should also have flexibility in what they learn. They claim that variable courses could help them find out what they are interested in. However, it is not practical for most schools. To provide a wide range of courses, schools need to spend more money on hiring teachers in different professions. For example, most public schools have a limited budget for hiring teachers in Taiwan, it is impossible for the school to give out specilize courses for students.

Nevertheless, there are some special groups that need specialized courses. For students that are gifted in a special field, they need special classes to train their talent. As an example, a student that has a strong talent in sport, who might be the next athlete in Olympics, should spend more time on training rather than learning math with other students. On the other hand, some special students that have learning disabilities, they need to be supported in special classes since normal courses are too difficult to understand.

In conclusion, a common core curriculum should be taught by most schools in order to ensure every student learns basic knowledge, but each nation should also provide special classes for training talented students and supporting enabled students.
