A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take.

There is a statement that all students in a country should be required to learn the same national curriculum before they enter the college. From my perspective, I agree that for some subjects, students should be free to choose some of them, while for the other subjects such as history and math, which are instrument to students, it is necessary for all students to learn. Moreover, the contents of courses should be same in nationwide.

The reason to allow students to select subjects free is to encourage diversity of development, and guide teenagers to explore fields that they are really interested in. There is a common phenomenon that different individuals have various interest and talent for subjects. Some of them may find science fascinating, while others may have preference on art or literature. What schools and parents should do is to help them go further on their own way, to cultivate diverse professionals, such as architects, historians, and scientists, rather than just set totally same curriculum and ask all students to perform evenly. The nation and the society want experts in different fields, rather than versatile who knows all things but is not professional in any realm. Therefore, it is reasonable to permit students to take various courses.

On the other hand, for those subjects which are fundamental, all students should be required to learn. Such curriculum may include math, history and so on. Math is an important subject which can promote students’ logical thinking. Rather than a tool, young people can learn a system of thinking from math. Especially for students who like science, math is the bedstone for further learning in physics and chemistry, even for students who like art, math can provide some ideas like pattern. History is another vital subject, which is related to the recognition of a nation. All citizens should learn some history so that they are able to judge things. Take Hong Kong as an example, students in Hong Kong learn little knowledge of history, so they form a wrong conception about country and belongingness. The result is that they pursue illegal right and freedom in a wrong way, which damage the interest of China. So learning history can encourage people to behave on behalf of the nation.

Moreover, contents of all subjects should be the same. The reason is to guarantee the fairness of exams. When students take exams to enter the high school, the standard of exam should be the same, that is to say all schools should teach the same thing for the same subject, and then students can be tested based on the same standard.

In conclusion, students are encouraged to learn different subjects and develop in various ways, but for the same subject the contexts should be identical to guarantee the fairness of exams. For some fundamental subjects, all students should be required to learn, so that they can gain the basic knowledge, which is useful for their future.

    Score: ungraded

    Issues:

    1. About 40% of the sentences exceed 20 words. Shorten/split them.
    2. About 15% of the sentences are passive. Convert some of them into their active counterparts.
    3. Lengthy paragraphs. Restrict each paragraph to 90 words.
