For starters, the author mentions that after advertising in a certain magazine, the sales of Fish Emporium started increasing steadily. Clearly, the author believes that it is the advertisement that mainly contributes to the increment of sales. However, there is not evidence manifesting that more people tend to buy fish because of their advertisements. Instead, price may play an important part in the scenario. Normally, fish is much cheaper than other pets like dogs or cats. For someone who wants to raise pets but do not earn much, fish is the best choice for them. Therefore, the core factor is the price other than the advertisement. Placing ads can not attract customers at all.
The second problem relates to customers. As the author maintains, the Fish Emporium store in Gulf City is extremely popular. Numerous people come to the store in the last year. Obviously, the author assumes all the customers are local residents. They are the potential customers of Lamfonz Pet Stores as well so it is the Fish store that occupies their market. However, another possibility is that most of them are visitors from other states or countries. They come to Fish emporium store to see some special fish produced only in this city. They do not come to buy pets actually. Therefore, putting ads on magazines is useless since most people come to Gulf City for visiting other than buying pets.
In addition, the author speculates that the decline of sales of Lamfonz results from more people decides to buy fish. More people know about the Fish Emporium and thus choose to buy fish. Yet people’s own tendency can also affect the choice. Without information about the location of the city, it can be assumed that the city located near the sea. Thus, most residents are more familiar with fish instead of dogs and cats. They are born to have a tendency of fish. In this case, no matter how the Lamfonz Pet Store promotes their pets in magazines, people can hardly change their mind. As a result, the decision is useless.
In conclusion, the decision makes sense to some extent. But some problems are still needed to consider carefully.

Below is the description of the task

The following is a memo from the marketing director of Lamfonz Pet Stores, which operates thirty pet stores worldwide.

“Five years ago, our competitor Fish Emporium started advertising in Exotic Pets Monthly magazine. Their sales overall have seen a steady increase of 3-to-5 percent per year since then. In fact, the Fish Emporium store in Gulf City saw even more remarkable gains, becoming the most visited pet store in the United States last year. Meanwhile, our two Lamfonz stores in Gulf City have seen sales steadily decline during the same period. It seems clear that we should immediately begin placing our own ads in Exotic Pets Monthly and other popular pet magazines. If we do so, we will be sure to reverse this recent trend of declining sales and start making a profit again.”

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
