Confronted with an increasingly competitive world, many people hold a belief that universities are supposed to merely teach students core subjects conducive to their job landing, wiping out culture classes. Nonetheless, I recommend students to attend courses on foreign culture in terms of social lives, the elimination of personal bias, and mental health.

First and foremost, being equipped with knowledge of the culture of different nations could provide them with conversation topics, benefiting their social skills. Surely, it seems improper to talk about serious politics or obscure theories acquired from schools when students meet a stranger for the first time. Then, knowledge of foreign traditions could serve as a constructive option, especially the ones of that stranger’s nation. For instance, to start up a friendly conversation with a Japanese girl, they can share their sincere compliments on homemade sushi and the delicacy of tea arts in Japan. Chances are that in doing so, students will feel at ease when making acquaintance with people with various backgrounds, thus enriching their social lives.

Meanwhile, understanding foreign cultures could eliminate personal bias, further contributing to social equality. To be more specific, the majority of students have never traveled abroad, which means their conceptions of other countries and people are largely dependent on their intrinsic feelings. Nonetheless, by no means could this information appear to be comprehensive and neutral. Likely, they may unconsciously form a misunderstanding of the outer world. In this case, the more frequently instructors impart correct information and educate these young people to appreciate the differences, the less bias will exist.

Nevertheless, a voice arises that the main goal for students is to achieve skills essential to land a dreamed profession, regarding the course of culture as nothing but a waste of time. Ironically, being always occupied with too many demanding courses might exhaust students and even cause mental illnesses such as depression among them. Hopefully, lectures introducing culture tend to be less tricky for young adults to handle, hence offering them a temporary break from the intensive study load.
