Some people think that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters such as food, clothes and entertainment is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. The discussion of whether children should make choices on their own on everyday matters is heated nowadays. Some people hold their ground that conniving kids to follow their bent leads to selfishness. Others argue that making decisions about matters plays an essential role in children’s mental health. In my view, there is no doubt that encouraging children to decide daily routines is of great importance and positive affection.

On one hand, given the chance of option, children are likely to consider their personal preference rather than take others’ wishes into account because of the egoistic nature. Once free choices are allowed, which means rules and constraints no longer exist, the sense of relief can easily drive children to make irrational choices, and one of the typical symbol is that children become self-centred while deciding what to eat or where to entertain. It seems that others’ opinion  are ineffective, since the right of determination is commanded by himself. Hence, the whole society will gradually become cold and detached.

On the other hand, the opportunity of opting everyday needs builds the ability of independence and responsibility. As we can imagine, facing the situation of choosing without any assistance, the youth are probably to think twice before actions. Since they have to take the consequences of their own determination, they put every effort to go through all the benefits and risks, and balance the acquisition and loss. This unique and practical training undoubtedly form the character of carefulness for young people.

To conclude, allowing children to decide daily matters indeed causes coldness and selfishness. However, despite of the fact that problems may arouse, I still insist that letting the youth make their choices independently can effect their all-round development in a positive way. Thus, options without assistance should be encouraged.
