Some people who have been successful in society don’t attribute their success to the theoretical knowledge they learned from university. Do you agree that theoretical knowledge is not as valuable as expected?
It seems that many people do not regard their achievements as a reward of the basic theories they gained when they were college school students . This may be true in some cases, but in my opinion, it is essential to grasp the theoretical knowledge as a key to develop a successful career.
On the one hand, basic theories enable us to gain an insight of concepts and principles in certain subjects ,which will contribute to the promotion of our career. This is because the knowledge and skills we grasp may encourage us to be an expertise in our favourite fields. For example, a psychiatrist cannot determine the best treatment unless he or she has a deep understanding of all theories about mental health problems. People who can master theories well are more likely to put it into use and make out practical experiences which is beneficial to their job prospects.
On the other hand, knowledge is a source of innovation. Although “practice makes perfect”, many of the inventions are based on the expertly use of theoretical knowledge , which make it possible for people to broaden their minds and develop creative solutions to problems. For instance, an engineer who has enough knowledge in materials science can design an engine which can perform well in freezing water and earn profits from this innovation.
Last but not the least, sometimes, theories should not be overvalued. If students apply theories blindly, they may lack of creativity and the ability on critical thinking. It will not only do harm to their studies, but also their career will suffer a lot as they grow older .
In conclusion, theoretical knowledge , if applied correctly, will be beneficial to people in their careers.
