Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is better to have broad knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize in one specific subject. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
It is a contentious long-term issue under intense discussion and wide concerns to become either a generalist or a specialist. As far as I am concerned, I deem it is a more sensible decision to specialize in one specific subject. Among countless factors, two conspicuous aspects included in this essay are the ability to earn more money and the opportunity be an elite in one field respectively.
Admittedly, being a generalist are more flexible having a broad option in the job market and hence is less likely to be unemployed in the fast dynamic changing society. However, since specializing need to spend more time to study and the positions are narrowly defined, specialists are hard to come by and they are usually more valuable and indispensable for company. According to the data of social researches, when company is appearing corporate layoffs, the generalists are more possible to be cut than specialists. Moreover, specialists usually perform a deeper insight towards tasks and advise thought-provoking report to the management level. Therefore, the salaries of specialists tend to be higher, even at the starting point.
Another reason for my propensity to focus on one specific subject is that specialists are more likely to be a true thought leader in an area of expertise. It is said that knowledge is infinite, but life is limited. In addition, people can make full use of limited life to concentrate on a specific field. Moreover, there are a lot of sub-subjects or divisions of a main subject. For instance, the science of journalism can include the theories of journalism, the histories of journalism both domestic and international, the news writing skills, the interview courses and the editorials writing and so on. It does mean a lot of work to do even if people just specialize in one subject. Thus, it is more auspicious to concentrate on one specific subject.
To summarize, I am inclined to support specializing in one specific subject is more suitable than studying broad knowledge of many academic subjects, in regard of the demand of employers and promotion of people themselves.
