Some people think that the detailed description of crimes in newspapers and TV has bad consequences, so this kind of information should be restricted in the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Controversy arises when a blaze of media coverage includes detailed crime reports. Opponents suggest that this news should be encouraged for crime deterrence, while I believe that the limitation of certain crime events yields more benefits for the sake of citizens and society.

The detailed description of crimes poses a safety hazard. Comprehensive crime reports probably include the time, criminal intent and victims. Apart from that, criminal process, tools and methods may be unveiled, which could provide constructive comments and suggests to the would-be offenders paradoxically. The easy access to crime information facilitates immoral people to have precise planning and avoid police tracing, therefore causing more evil deeds and increasing crime rates that harm the citizens’ safety.

Teenagers’ physical and mental health should also be considered. Bloody and brutal offence news with horrible images on television may have a detrimental impact on people’s physical and mental health, especially teenagers. Young people, whose moral values are still immature, may be more susceptible to the influence of their surroundings. Role models are necessary, while their perception of the world would be flooded with negative information without limitation of criminal reports. More seriously, some teenagers may imitate these events for excitement, which in turn causes the rise of juvenile delinquency.

In conclusion, given citizens’ safety and development, the overly detailed description of crimes such as cruelty and methods should be restricted. Instead, the harsh punishment and sentences to offenders could be reported to enhance people’s confidence about community policing and the power of law.
