Do we learn the most from people whose views we share?
When an idea is raised, there must be supporters and voices of disagreement. Both of which can cause interactions between brains and minds. But which of them can make people learn from more? There’s a claim that people learn and absorb more when facing with others who share similar opinions with it. Indeed, common views may lead to cooperation, thus results in a greater joint success than an individual progress one can achieve. However, in certain cases, disputes and rows sometimes can contribute to even more amazing achievement that we’re able to learn from.
Admittedly, cooperation and team work is also based on common views and shared objectives. Once an agreement is established, people are able to work together on the same side for a same pursue. During the cooperation, one may learn much more than developing only on its own individually. A typical example is the common view of writers and poets, especially when they were identical in themes and writing styles. Poets of romanticism would gather on a fine afternoon, sharing their thoughts and expressing their romantic emotions freely while having a nice cup of tea under the mild sunlight. They borrowed each other’s idea and used other’s work as a reference while creating their owns. Inspirations exploded while brain storms bring on bright ideas and creative innovations. Such exchanging of thoughts and ideas is in fact valuable, providing a perfect environment for people to learn from each other and generate new idea.
Not out of expectation, conversely, disagreement and even rows sometimes can make people learn as well. Disputes encourage people to work hard on proving their rightness and correctness, which becomes a great motivation pushing them to achieve more. A famous controversy happened among the greatest physicists in last century, debating on the true nature of light – whether it is particle or wave. Physicists on both sides stand steadfastly and debated furiously without compromises. Trying to prove their correctness, they both advocated in designing experiments and introducing hypothesis to improve their theories. As a result, they all achieved unprecedented breakthrough in the research and learn more about the properties of electronic waves and quantum. The whole new domain, namely quantum mechanics, was then established. Apparently, this huge disputes in physics history make people have a whole new understandings of microcosmic world, tons of knowledge had been obtained through the whole argument lasting decades.
To sum up, either agreements or disputes can bring on developments that make people learn. Sharing of views leads to cooperation, which becomes a more effective and efficient approach for people to grow and improve. On the other hand, upon certain circumstances, debates turned out to be a fantastic motivation and catalyzer to activate more progress to be carried out. Though acting differently on people, they both result in lessons and knowledge learned by human. Learning best from people holding similar opinions may be a too arbitrary claim.
