We are entering a new era of society. The development of the Internet has come to pervade every aspect of our lives, especially the influence of digital books, and as a result, some people consider the internet brings a lot of information for students to learn history and there is no need to take history courses in the university. However, I am a firm believer in that the benefits of university history courses cannot be superseded by any other forms of learning no matter what the student’s field of study is. The reasons and examples are as follows.

In the first place, history courses are more than just providing historical information for students to remember. These courses equip students with historical views and enable them to learn from the past and failures. This knowledge hides behind the surface of history stories and students always need to understand these experiences with the help of instructors. Take World War One as an example, if students look through the stories in text books, they will find the relationships between different countries hard to understand. But under the edification of professors, students can acquire a better understanding of the significance of certain events or policies such as the Declaration of Independence. This is one piece of solid evidence about the necessity of history courses.

Secondly, let’s talk about why students should take history courses no matter what their field is. It’s known that history is the rationale of all subjects. Every subject, no matter if it is Journalism, Maths, Chinese or something else, has its history. And new studies must be based on previous studies and knowledge which are the most important parts of its history, to make new progress and draw a new conclusion. This is exactly the idea in the case of Journalism. In the colonial era of the U.S., the press played a significant role in pushing the public towards independence and forming a new nation. And when learning from this history, students majoring in Journalism will grasp the power of the press and make full use of it to facilitate democracy.

Admittedly, the professional course for university students to take has already been a heavy task. For instance, some students may need to take three to four different professional courses a week and they do not have time to learn additional knowledge. However, from my own perspective, given the current situation, universities should pay more attention to the design of courses because a lot of professional courses can be combined with historical knowledge.

In a nutshell, I suppose history courses have more positive influence than detrimental ones on students in the university. Thus, university students are highly advised to take history no matter what their field of study is.
