    Do you agree or disagree that giving every member of a group the same grade is a good way to evaluate students?

    I believe that giving every member of a group the same grade for a group project is a good way to evaluate students. Following are my reasons.

    First, group projects aim to test how well students cooperate with their group members, and grading the group as a whole is consistent with this purpose. Group projects are not like final exams, where personal abilities determine the results. Instead, it takes teamwork to do well in group projects. So grading the group as a whole can encourage group members to cooperate each other to make the whole project look good, instead of only focusing on their own parts. As a result, those who get high scores will be those who really care group work, and that is what group projects are meant for.

    Second, grading group members as a whole trains students’ sense of responsibility. It is important that students cultivate their sense of responsibility in high school and universities to get them prepared for their career, where sense of responsibility is emphasized a lot. Group projects where group members are given the same score are great opportunities for students to learn how to be responsible, not only for theirselves, but also for the groups.

    Third, if students of a group are graded individually, it can be hard to keep it fair. A group project is usually divided into several parts, with each part being allocated to a group member. While in theory each part should be of equal importance and should require the same amount of work. But in real situations this is usually not possible. Some parts can look more important than others, and some parts can turn out to be more time-consuming than others. In these cases, it is intriguing to give more credits to group members who take those more important or more time-consuming parts. However, this is unfair to students who take the parts that turn out to be easy, as they usually do not mean to contribute less to the project.
