Group assignments that students must work together to complete should replace a substantial amount of traditional lecture-based instruction in college and university courses. Reason: It is vital for students to gain experience collaborating with peers to study a topic and to achieve a common

In order to encourage students to collaborate with peers, many professors aim to replace lecture-based instruction with teamwork activities. However, I disagree with the statement since many problems from group assignments tend to weaken the benefits that used to be.

In group assignments, the quality of learning is highly related to all group members, whereas it only depends on the student himself/herself in traditional class. What if there is a problem student in the group who never show off in class and lack of responsibility? Other team members need to do all his work for him but end up get the same score. In this case, none of the members learned any profitable skill but got mad at each other. Additionally, it is hard for teachers to know the situation in each group, making it difficult and unfair when grading.

In addition, learning in traditional courses is still necessary. Group assignments can only work under the assumption that all students are in the same knowledge level. If teamwork replaces all the lecture instruction, students have to learn all basic knowledge from the Internet, textbooks and peers. Then why do they have to go to college? All these works can be done by using a computer at home.

Nevertheless, for some high-grade students, it is a good choice to replace courses with group assignments. Since high-grade students had already acquired most knowledge they need in their field, spending time listening to professors is a waste of time. Since high-grade students had known their peers pretty well, the possibility of working with “bad team members” are lower. Having a chance to join group assignments can not only gain collaboration skills and also explore different perspectives from peers.

In conclusion, I disagree to replace most traditional courses by group assignments in college. Only for some high-graded courses, the statement is acceptable.
