TOPIC: “How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.”

The children of today are the society of tomorrow. So as our social order evolves and embraces the march of new technology, each generation of children becomes exposed to a new set of values. The post-war children are now the ‘golden oldies’, and often look on in bewilderment at the gadget-crazy childhood of the modern day youngster. Their days of learning to walk the path of life are as different as chalk and cheese. As a result, our society of tomorrow, our unknown destiny, is already being shaped by the inevitable events of today.

To begin with, today’s parents and grandparents never had the plusses or the perils of the Internet and mobile phone to contend with. Although having brought significant advantages to society, these hi-tech mediums of communication have major downsides which are inflicting massive change to our society. For instance, children are exposed to gratuitous violence, computer games and pornography at the mere click of a button. What are the long-term effects, the more mature of us ask? It’s beyond dispute that the pace of technological advances will influence our young in a significant manner. As a consequence, the age of innocence has all but disappeared before our eyes.

Furthermore, most parents view education as the key to the path of riches and happiness. Unlike their parents, most children now begin their formal learning at kindergarten, while mum and dad both work to pay for all the good things in life. Outside of school, the kids are often in the care of others, or alone at home while the parents toil. What moral and social values are being eroded by this lack of human or parental care. Undoubtedly, many children are overindulged in, and free to experience an array of tempting bad habits. In Western countries, early teenage pregnancies are at epidemic levels.

In conclusion, what we all want is for a fairer and more just society. Nevertheless, how to achieve that dream is the major challenge facing humanity. For today’s more mature generation, the path ahead looks fraught with perils as more and more of our young seem consumed with greed and the quick-fix happiness. However, it is clearly apparent that the pace of change within our current social order determines that tomorrow’s destiny is as much a mystery as it has ever been.
