TPO 38 Integrated Writing: In 1995 a microscopic fungus called phytophthora ramorum, or P. ramorum, was first detected in the forests of the western United States.

Both the reading and the listening are discussing about how to protect  forests from infecting P. ramorum. The reading part claims three methods to solve this problem, while the listening part totally disagrees with these viewpoints.

First, the reading part suggests that the one of effective means is preventing P. ramorum spores from spreading by washing people’s shoes and installing new bike scrubbers. On the contrary, the professor in the listening says that even though spores will be spread by human activities, this kind of impact will not be huge. Also, spores can be spread by water string or rain water, which will bring spores away from long distance. That is hard to control.

Second, according to the reading part, owing to a few fungus fighting chemical, these oak tree are easy to be infected. However, the listening part shows that this method will cost a few months, thus these spores will repeat during this period of time. Meanwhile, it is not practical to make whole oaks use chemicals and attaining chemicals to each oaks will spend much money.

Third, the reading points out that clear-cutting will be a effective way. But the listening holds the point that people cannot assure which vegetation is infected. Cutting and burning vegetation  randomly, some weird species will be destroyed, which will cause great damages to the environment. Therefore, clear-cutting is not a good idea.

The reading part and the listening both discuss how to protect forests from infecting P. ramorum, which is a kind of microscopical fungi can damage oak trees. The reading part states three methods to solve this problem, while the professor in lecture totally disagrees with these means .

First, the reading part suggests that one of effective methods of helping oak trees avoid being infected is to prevent P. ramorum spores from spreading by washing people’s shoes and installing new bike wheels. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture says that even though spores will be spread by human activities,  their impact will be not huge. Also, spores can be spread by water string or rainwater, which will bring spores away from long distance. Under this situation, just washing shoes or replacing bike wheels will make no sense.

Second, according to the reading part, owing to a few fungi-fighting chemical, which can be injected into trees and protect them, these oak trees are easy to be infected. However, the lecture shows even though this way can make some difference, their effect will last for just a few months. Thus infections will need to be repeated many times. Meanwhile, making whole oaks be injected chemicals and attaining chemicals to each oak trees will cost much money.

Third, the reading points out that cutting and burning diseased oaks will be an effective way to protect oaks from infected; but the listening holds that people cannot assure the infected vegetation. Also, cutting and burning vegetation randomly may do harm to some weird species, which could cause great damages to the environment. Therefore, clear-cutting is not a good idea.
