In some countries, more and more people are becoming interested in finding out about the history of the house or building they live in. What are the reasons for this? How can people research this? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

In some countries, people are likely to retrospect the history of their houses. It is important to figure out why they are so curious about the place they live in and how can they get to know this kind of information.

One possible explanation is that the house is an embodied symbol mark of family culture. Via knowing more about one house, people can deeply learn the history of their family, including why they came to live in this territory,  how did the elders work for creating a nicer living environment. By understanding all these family stories that has performed in this area, people can possess a clear family identity.

The desire to satisfy individual’s need of safety is another cause of people’s curiosity to their house. The sense of safety is one of people’s basic needs, and house is usually seen as a safe zone. Therefore, when people get to know more about their home, such as how the buildings decorations are placed , what unique functions do their furniture have, what interesting stories do the appliances tell, their uncertainty to the place they live will reduce, and more information lead to deeper sense of safety.

Two measures can be taken to research building’s history. First of all, people can ask the elders from their home for some information about their house. For example, they can ask their grandfather and grandmother about the family block. Because the elders has lived so long time in this building, their memories can be seen as some important parts of oral history.

Searching files from the government is another way to know family building’s history. For example, people can get some recording of their house from the community streets office, since the government has the obligation to type in relevant data of the area under their administration.

To summarize, concrete family culture and need for safety may be two reasons to explain people’s interest to their houses’ history. Asking elder generations or searching from official recordings may be two means to get some valuable knowledge of  house.
