In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

It’s common sense for many cultures to encourage children to spare no effort so that they can achieve their goals. However, this idea does have positive and negative effects.

On the one hand, it does boost children’s confidence. As a saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way”. This thought provides children with courage and hopes that they can get success through their efforts. Meanwhile, when faced with challenges, children are convinced that they can overcome problems. For example, there is a story called “YuGongYiShan” in China. It said that a man moved a mountain in ancient time. Thousands of years ago, it was almost impossible for a man to change the position of a large mountain. Yugong, the pioneer, told his descendants that they have the ability to achieve it with persistent work. After generations of effort, they finally moved the mountains.

On the other hand, this idea will discourage children if they fail. Since failures are normal, losers will doubt whether they have tried their best. In fact, success requires not only diligence but also talent and opportunity. Moreover, there are limitations on talent. As a fairy tale said, the chicken who followed the duck can never learn to swim. If we tell children they can achieve anything without limitation, then every kid will believe they can become an excellent pianist or sports player, which is a daydream.

In conclusion, we should encourage children to find their interests and try their best. What’s more, be aware that they have the possibility to fail.
