In the past, young people depended too much on their parents to make decisions for them; today young people are better able to make decisions about their own lives.

Life decisions, the foundation of a meaningful life, have been valued and even trigger heated discussion over whether should young people make their own decisions. Decisions that matter a lot, in some people’s view, should be made by an individual himself or herself. Contrary to these people’s opinion is my perspective that teenagers should listen to their parent’s suggestions when making decisions.

What must be prioritized is that parents have lived a much longer lives than their children and have possessed much more experiences without a doubt. To begin with, generally parents are 20~30 years older than their children which means that they have accumulated 20~30 years more experiences. To be more specific, parents have known a wider range of knowledge or other secular principles which can help to evaluate the situation their children are facing.

What should be equally worth discussing is that parents might have already experienced the exact same situation or obstacles that teenagers are coping with. For example, an young boy is pondering if he should go to a medical school or a law school, his father is a attorney and was also thinking about going to medical school 20 years ago just like his son. Now the father can based on his life experience to explain the pros and cons of being a lawyer to his son; in contrast, if the boy make his own decision without listening to his father’s suggestion, he may regret that after 20 years.

Decisions, like crossroads to cars, determine the life path of a young person. To sum up, if there are two valuable living textbooks care about you and give you advises, one should definitely follow or at least be open minded to listen to them.
