In their advertising, businesses nowadays usually emphasise that their products are new in some way. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
It is true that manufacturers are trying to emphasize that their products are equipped with advanced technologies in the advertisment, in order to assert that the quality of their commodities is excellent, which leaves a great impression to customers. We need to explore the reason behiend the condition.
One of the reasons is that most of people are chasing for the newest products as well as they believe that the more advanced the things they buy are, the better service they will enjoy. Take Tesla, the green energy powered automobile, as an example. Tesla company claims that their vehicle uses the top technology in the car system, and the fuel it consumes is absolutely new. It decorated the car as a pioneer exploring the new field, resulting in thousands of cars sold per year.
Another reason is declaring the products are new in some way is an ambiguous but effective way to conduct propaganda. On the one hand, the company only needs to add some”fashion”key words such as “newly developed” or “high tech-machines” to draw costumers’ attention. At the same time, such advertisements deliver a massage that their products are better in this feild unconsciously. On the other hand, a number of people are only looking for new things without researching the real quality and performance the products provide. Once something is claimed to be advanced, they would take it immediately.
In my opinion, this is a negative development. As a matter of fact, most of costumers are not experts in analyzing the products they buy. The general tag “new” does not represent that a certain type of product is more convenient or outstanding than others. In this way, manufacturers might cover the flaws and disadvantages by emphasizing their products are advanced in the market, which harm the customers’ benefits dangerously.
