Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In twenty years there will be fewer cars in use than there are today.
Traveling by car constitutes a large part of our transportation. Undoubtedly cars have become the most popular private vehicle in most countries. Yet, the downsides brought by large amounts of cars permeate our life: air pollution, energy shortage, and traffic jam. Will the growth trend continue? Will there be fewer cars in the next score of years? I would say, unfortunately, no.
Though car ownership has almost saturated in western countries, people who can afford a car are rare in the third world. But the economy is surging in lots of currently impoverished areas, citizens’ purchasing power picking up. In these emerging market, cars will soon become a vital household facility. Like the TV, luxury twenty years ago, typical today.
Actually, governments have already done a lot to abate the car boost, mainly as a remedy to alleviate air pollution. But clean energy such as hydrogen is already mature enough. Unlike traditional cars, the purchase of cars driven by clean fuels is promoted by the government. As variant new technologies arising, the political force may not constrain the sales of cars.
From another facet, the economy and technology may rise so fast that the world twenty years later is a completely new one. New vehicles with higher speed and lower energy consumption, maybe a flying car, may replace cars. Though brand new vehicles are emerging, I doubt their possibility to generalize. Advanced technique denotes exorbitant prices. When cars were first invented, it was exclusive to only the higher class. It took cars decades to become accessible to common people. Likewise, the newly invented may not occupy the market in merely twenty years.
