The development of technology enables people to have more opportunities to meet new friends. For example, online social media is a good place to meet like-minded people, where internet surfers who are big fans of sports can talk about their favorite sports celebrities and exciting sports games. More importantly, the Internet technology allows people from all over the world to interact with each other. So people are more likely to make foreign friends in the comfort of their homes. They can share cultures, traditions and lifestyles in their own hometowns.

Some critics argue that technology has made people lonelier and more disconnected because they lack face-to-face communication with others now. However, I believe that this is a short-sighted opinion. Due to progress in the Internet technology, people are able to communicate with their friends or family over phones, by e-mails and through video chat programs, which are all convenient and time-saving communication tools. For that reason, people do not need to travel a long distance to visit their friends who live far away from them because they can chat online. Therefore, it can be argued that modern online technology makes it easier for people to keep in touch with their loved ones, thereby maintaining strong relationships.
