It is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction. Being able to distinct right and wrong is critical for children’s moral development. I believe that punishment can help children realize their mistakes and shape their behavior, although physical punishment should be avoided.

Sometimes, children may lack the awareness to behave well, while punishment can cultivate right moral standards in them. For example, some children may take it for granted that they can spend money at will without realizing that their parents have been working hard to earn money. They may steal money from their parents for items that their parents prevent them from buying, like junk food or comic books. In that case, parents should punish their children, like cutting off their pocket money for a month, to warm them that their behavior is disappointing. With proper punishment, children can learn from their mistakes and behave themselves.

In addition, it is likely that children cannot restrain themselves from doing something wrong, so punishment is needed to help regulate them. For instance, children may find it hard to keep quiet in class and cannot help whispering with others. Therefore, teachers have the responsibility to remind them that they are disturbing other students so that they should be punished.

Nevertheless, physical punishment should always be avoided to impose on children. Children are not only vulnerable in body, but also in heart. If they are punched or slammed when they make mistakes, they will feel miserable and despaired. Some may even develop mental diseases, like anxiety and depression.

In conclusion, I do think that punishment is a must to teach children about right and wrong; however, parents and teachers should use methods like confiscating pocket money instead of physical punishment.
