LRC: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Movies and television have more negative effects than positive effects on the way young people behave. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Nowadays, movies and televisions are common in every families. Young people tend to have more opportunities to watch movies. When it comes to the issue about whether movies and  televisions have more negative effects than positive effects on the way young people, people’s opinion differs from person to person, and culture to culture. Some people think movies and televisions have more negative effect because the spread of gun scenes and pornography in movies and televisions tend to make young viewers more violently and consequently drive up youngsters crime rate. However, I oppose this view, I would like to point out that movies and televisions tend to bring more positive effects to young people.

Firstly, watching movies can broaden young viewer’s vision and help develop their hobbies. Televisions contain tremendous amount of messages and information about animals, sports, health care, that can promote the development of young people’s horizon and develop a healthy hobby. Take NBA player Kobe Bryant as an example, when he was a young boy, he saw NBA games from television. The excellent games impressed him a lot, therefore, he decided to join basketball team and finally became a superstar.

Secondly, watching movies and television programs can promote the communication and interaction between families. Young people often lack of emotional communications with their parents, watch movies with parents has inherent advantages of enabling young people and their parents remove the barrier for communication with each other. Take myself as an example, in my childhood, my father was very busy and hardly had time to accompany with me. One day, when I was watching movie, he was on holiday and he came to watch movie with me. During the movie, we talked a lot and laughed out loudly, after that, I felt the interaction between us has enhanced and we became best friend.

Admittedly, the media like movies and television programs also spread unhealthy information to vulnerable young people. The widespread gun scenes and pornography have a detrimental influence upon teenagers. Crimes stem from imitating movie characters actions, these imitations pose a very real threat to society.
