    Personally speaking, I would support to retain the public libraries and the reasons would be given in the following content. There are several key reasons to expound the indispensable role of public libraries.

    First, the public libraries undertake the educational function. The wide range and types of materials could provide various ways and experience for different kinds of people, especially people without professional skills, broad horizon and high adaptability, such as the children, the elders and the disabled. Due to age or era limitation and living pressure, these persons might lack the chance and consciousness to gain knowledge as leisure. In this sense, the public libraries could save their preparatory work and low down their threshold. Then, these people living without computer technology would obtain proportionable chance in the society. Eventually, knowledge could be expanded to most people.

    Second, the public libraries also provide the archived function. Under the electronic storage and the threat of power failure, the paper and other kinds of physical carriers remain irreplaceable nowadays. The old versions of publications and past periodicals within several years could be stored and borrowed before moved to the archives and other institutions.

    Third, public libraries could offer the social function for community. Irregularly, public events would be hold in public libraries. For example, the art exhibitions, reading clubs and professional seminars could be registered beforehand or open to public. Through these activities, the public libraries could allow residents’ communication and furthermore facilitate the community interaction.

    Therefore, the necessity of public libraries could be indicated through three functional aspects. Even though the computer technology continuously progresses, the public libraries persist their existence based on its unique social role and contribution.
