The demand for engineers of many companies exceeds the supply of university. Some people hold a notion that university should set more practical courses and no longer offer theoretical subjects in order to meet the need of job market. I disagree such assertion and think that university should provide both theoretical and practical subjects for students.

Admittedly, practical subjects play an important role in our society. Companies can create big value by collaborating with universities. For example, Silicon Vally is famous for its innovative technologies, which benefit from Stanford University nearby. Since 20th century, Stanford University has consistently cultivated students who mainly majored in computer science and electronic technology. These students establish high-tech companies step by step, including HP, Yahoo and Google, which all change our daily lives. By contrast, these outstanding graduates fund many scholarships to encourage more students engaging in computer industry.

However, university is not the job training institution which only teach practical skills. It is significant for university to encourage students to explore the world and find what they really want to do. The world cannot lack mathematicians, philosophers and economists. Besides, we all live in a world where theory and practice intersect. For instance, the development of computer science need a solid basic of mathematics. If you want to improve the ability of an algorithm, you should know the algebra and matrix. It means that all of us must study a wide range of knowledge to prepare for our future careers.

In conclusion, university should set up various subjects not only to meet job market but also to meet students’ interests.
