Many students starting university must choose a major (main field of study at university), and parents of these students often give them advice about which major to choose. Some parents tell students to choose the major that most interests the students. Other parents tell students that it is best to choose a major that will lead to a job with a high salary, even if that major may not be the one that most interests the students. Which approach do you believe is better, and why?

Many students starting university must choose a major (main field of study at university), and parents of these students often give them advice about which major to choose. Some parents tell students to choose the major that most interests the students. Other parents tell students that it is best to choose a major that will lead to a job with a high salary, even if that major may not be the one that most interests the students. When students enter into college, their parents always feel confused about what major they had better choose. Some parents suggest students studying their interested major. But others think a major which can bring a high-salary job is the best choice. I firmly agree with the former idea because a interested major can bring both more stimulation and high salaries to students.

Firstly, the major of interest gives us extra motivation to enhance our academic level. The courses in the college are so intensive that it is easier for students to feel bored and exhausted about study. However, when we face a major we actually love, we will feel curious about the knowledge in this field. This curiosity will motivate us to study hard in a refreshed state. On the contrary, we may not fit in a major with high salaries and it will exhaust our enthusiasm about study. As a result, so many student quit their previous major and choose the major they actually love when they enter the graduate school.

Secondly, the major we love can also help us to get high salaries if we have enough capacity. It is true that the students in certain majors are hard to find a satisfying job. However, competent elites are scarce in every field and any company welcomes the top students no matter what major are in. What’s more, people who possess a doctor or master degree isn’t worried about finding a good job with higher salaries. Take my classmate’s experience for example. He stick to study Japanese which is not seen as a promising major but he really loved it. And the interest motivated him to work hard and be in the first place in the college. Eventually, he got his doctor’s degree in Peking University and became an excellent translator with considerable income.

To sum up, I believe it is more beneficial for students to choose a interested major than a high-paying major in the college. A major they love can stimulate them to study hard and get a high-salary job when they graduate.
