Environmental problems have become a common concern to many. Some people  insist that the major environmental concern is the extinction of plants and animals while others think there are more significant problems. Generally, I believe that the loss of plants and animals is just a part of environmental problems.

Many people suggest that the loss of special species of plants and animals is a severe environmental problem, because it can be detrimental to biodiversity. The extinction of a species would harm ecological balance. For instance, if wolves died out, the number of sheep would soar since they don’t have predators. Consequently, grasslands may be damaged as the number of sheep strain the carrying capacity of the meadow.

At the same time, some people may argue that there are more severe environmental issues related to peoples’ behaviors.  The fact is that the population has been increasing in recent years. In order to meet peoples’ needs, the government continuously exploit  natural resources. For example, they cut trees to make furniture and paper, and to construct houses so as to accommodate the rising population. Additionally, people take advantage of every  type of energy without restraint, which would cause energy crisis.

Personally, although the extinction of plants and animals is a serious environmental concern, it only one aspect of environmental problems. The key core of environmental issues is a balance between the growing population and limited natural resources. Human use advanced technologies to consume and exploit natural resources like fossil energy sources, lands and marine resources in order to satisfy their desires without restraint. As a result, their actions deteriorate the environment such as species extinction.
