Some people believed that in order to be effective, political leaders must yield to public opinion and abandon principle for the sake of compromise. Others believed that the most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles

The statement contains two groups of people who held opposing views about whether leaders should consistently commit to themselves or listen to public opinion. From the perspective of improving efficiency, I argue that we can benefit more if leaders are consistently committed to their principles and objective.

Leaders can better fulfill their mission and finished their duty by following their particular principles and objective. The main responsibility of leaders is to solve internal problems and promote the development of society. Compared with ordinary people, they have more professional knowledge and analytical capabilities, so their decisions are often more correct and reasonable. Take Roosevelt’s New Deal as an example. In 1933, Roosevelt ascended to the presidency in despair and immediately introduced the New Deal. However, it has been questioned and blocked from various quarters. In the face of the Republican Party’s exaggerated attacks on his disability, the masses’ distrust of the government, and the doubts of conservatives who believed in Hoover’s laissez-faire policy and hostile to the “New Deal”, he still strengthened his beliefs and goals. Huge reforms have been carried out in the banking, industry, agriculture, employment rate, and social welfare sectors. As Roosevelt’s New Deal comprehensively strengthened its intervention in the economy, the US economy began a slow recovery. It was precise because Roosevelt was not disturbed by the heretical ideas of the masses and insisted on his principles in the chaotic era, which finally led the United States to resolve the crisis and fulfill the mission of a great leader.

Society can develop more efficiently by listening to leaders instead of the public. In the era of diversification, there are more aspects of our society that need to be improved, so high efficiency is particularly important. If we listen to the masses, we will inevitably waste a lot of time on unnecessary arguments. Take nuclear technology as an example. As early as 1953, President Eisenhower signed the US “Peaceful Development of Nuclear Energy” plan. This move now appears to be extremely wise. But at that time the United States was in the Cold War period, at the same time it was carrying out a plan to rebuild Europe, and the domestic democratic movement reached a climax. The people at that time simply couldn’t understand that the government spent a lot of money and time studying a field that they had never heard of. At this time, the leader did not listen to the public, but strengthened his political views. In the end, the development of nuclear power has enabled the United States to reduce its dependence on imported oil and natural gas, greatly improving its lives and solving environmental problems. It is precise because of obeying the leaders that the country has successfully developed nuclear technology while maintaining the normal operation of other areas.

In summary, I believe that leaders should stick to their views, so that they can be more effective in fulfilling their mission and in social development.
