Professors at universities should spend more time doing research than educating students.

In modern universities, professors act as researchers and teachers simultaneously. When it comes to the primary role of professors, some claim that performing research deserves more time than teaching. I agree with this statement since conducting research can benefit students, universities and the whole society.

It is true that professors are the teachers at universities. It is their responsibility to educate students by presenting lectures as well as assigning homework. But this does not mean that conducting research is of no importance. In fact, those professors who have achieved success in research tend to be better instructors. Doing research enables them to catch up on the latest innovations, and gain a deep understanding of cutting-edge knowledge they are going to pass on. Furthermore, as a director of one particular project, a professor usually encourages students to join his or her group. Some students even become research assistants and thus prepare themselves for the pursuit of graduate study in the future.

Besides, conducting research has far-reaching impact. Research achievements define a university’s national and international reputation. For example, professors at the MIT Media Lab work in over twenty-five research groups and on initiatives involving more than 450 projects. They have created innovative technologies while pioneering such areas as wearable devices and pattern recognition. Every time one of the Lab’s creative technologies finds its way into useful applications, there are jobs created in manufacturing, processing and advertising. As such, local people can increase their income and enjoy a higher quality of life.

According to the discussion above, the advantages brought by doing research outweigh those stemming from teaching. Therefore, it would be better for professors to devote more time and attention to research projects.
