Task 1: Proportion of different categories of families living in poverty in Australia.

The chart indicates the rate of various types of impoverished families living in Australia in 1999.

In general, single parents and single adults tended to live in poverty compared to their couple counterparts.

On average, the proportion of people living in poverty in all households accounted for 11%, comprising almost 2 million people. The figures for sole parent and single adult represented the largest, with 21% and 19% respectively, and were almost double the poverty rate of all households.

Couples were more likey to be better off compared to single parents and single adults, with higher poverty level for couples with children(12%) and couples without children(7%). It is noticable that for both types of household with children, a higher than average proportion were living in poverty.

Senior citizens were the richest of all the groups and once again the trend favoured the senior couples(only 4%) rather than single elderly people(6%).
