Scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

It’s universally agreed that we live in an age of explosive accumulation of information in almost every area, social life, education, economy and so on. What comes with this downpour is the powerful voice sent out from, more often, the older generation, claiming it is the huge information pool that alienate the precious quality of us to think independently. This assertion, however reflective and educative, leaves out one important feature of massive amount of accessible information on the good side, which is the exposure of accidents, especially those scandals that can uncover serious issues which could result in detrimental consequences, otherwise we could never notice either from books or great thoughts.

Let’s first think about what makes a scandal. Could it be paraphrased as bad news? Now if we review the the titles on newspaper of those unfortunately exposed scandals, we could easily find words like ”exposed”, ”uncovered”, or ”revealed”. That is to say, there’s more than a disturbing fact that makes a “good” scandal. More importantly, the very escape of the scandal from our close attention. Moreover, it’s not the problem itself, but the fact turns regular bad news to a scandal that we never reflected on before how precisely all the parties involved hide the problem from media and society, how authorities and legal institutions lack of power to detect it and put just trial on it, and how people could let go of it when they are at mere distraction.

Now some would argue, that there’s no new thing under the sun. That is to say, whatever those scandals are revealing is some age-old issue recurring in 21st century, and thus some must have noticed the problems behind long time ago and even worked on them to fight for social justice. However, it’s the timing and different situation that attach scandals a precious quality in the sense that they force people to think about why and how old issue could still exist vigorously today and fool all the innocent people under new circumstances. In other words, it’s not the old script on which great thinkers who lived in kingdoms or even tribes may have already deeply meditated, but the new adaption, where the highly modernized and international world becomes the new background, should I say, is the very thing that leads us to problems otherwise we could never pay attention to.

In a word, if we confine our discussion in the realm of scandals, rather than mere bad news, there must be some indispensable components such as a thick mask and blatant cloak, which make it possible for those to slip away under our eyes. Although the disappointing incident or its essence had already been talked over and over before, it’s the animation and vigor of the old problem that exist till nowadays make it a problem which cast light on a whole new subject to us.
