Do you think scientists should be required to allow others to use their inventions for free?

In today’s competitive world, innovations play an important role in people’s lives, they bring about new opportunities as well as challenges. Some people claim that scientists should be required to allow others to use their inventions for free. However, this statement does not make sense. I believe that inventions should be priced and their ownership must be kept by inventors.

Scientists should apply for patents to protect their own rights. They have put a lot of effort into researching in order to make some achievements, which is time-consuming and exhausting. Apparently, they deserve money as a reward and recognition. Besides, charging money for their innovations might be a major source of income for scientists, with the money they earned, they will be able to buy new instruments and machines as well as recruit assistants, so as to support their further research and make new ideas come true. On the contrary, if anybody is allowed to use these innovations for free, merchants would make a big fortune out of the original creations, while the inventors get nothing, which is unfair and disrespectful to them.

If the government does not protect intellectual property as much as it should, the whole society will lack creativity. We have to take experts’ feelings into consideration. People who choose to be scientists might not eager to be famous and wealthy. Even if they are totally unknown, they know that they are praiseworthy for their work. However, they do care about the future and applications of their work, they would be motivated if their innovations are priced and respected. Otherwise, they might choose to leave academia since they have no control over their own products. The development of technology, in some ways, shapes the future of a nation,it is obvious that we should guarantee people’s right of charge so as to courage new inventions.

It would be wise to say that scientists should be allowed to charge for their inventions, and it has never been an easy task to protect intellectual property, there is still a long way to go in many countries.
