Several languages are in danger of extinction because they are spoken by very small numbers of people. Some people say that governments should spend public money on saving these languages, while others believe that would be a waste of money.

It is true that rare languages with so few speakers that have been at the edge of extinction. People have conflicting views on whether governments ought to protect these languages with public money or not. From my personal perspective, I tend to agree that governments are supposed to give them a favour.

Admittedly, governments have the responsibility of culture protection, including material culture and immaterial culture. As a type of immaterial culture, languages seem like tools which help human communicate with each other and bread their customs, thoughts, arts and history. The extinction of several languages also means that the culture of their speakers is disappearing. Besides, several languages are able to help historians to understand the process of how the society consisted of rare language speakers developed. Hence, it is meaningful for governments to save rare languages with public money.

On the other hand, there is another point of view on it, which considers it as a financial waste. These groups are opposed to prevent several languages from extinction with public money because governments in some areas suffering from poverty or epidemics have not enough money to guarantee the basic living of their individuals after all. They prefer to use the funds to improve the level of residents’ life, which will be used to save rare languages. However, it is possible to ask United Nations or international charity organizations for a favour of several languages protection. It should not be given up easily because of poverty or diseases.

In conclusion, my view is that it is necessary for governments to keep rare languages from disappearance and the UN has the responsibility to help those with problems of finance to finish saving work.
