Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

People have different views about whether it will be better to let children make decisions on their daily matters like food, hobbies, and clothes. While it might have some slight disadvantages, it is rather important to let them make their own choices on matters that affect them.

Some people hold the view that giving children such privilege can let to their selfishness. Being allowed to decide everything on their own at an early age, they are less likely to learn to consider about others, which is a vital part of social morality. As a result, there will be a society where people never help each other, nobody gives money to charity and people have conflicts for insignificant things, which is opposite to what we value.

However, opponents attach great importance to letting children decide on what affects them. Firstly, it fosters independence in children’s character. Children will face a lot of situations that require them to make decisions when they grow up, such as job determination and mate selection. If they never try to make their own choices at an early age, they can be lost in confusion or make wrong choices in these situations, which will have an adverse impact on their self-development. Besides, children can gain responsibility through making decisions for their own because they are more likely to accept and face the consequences caused by their own choices. If it is the choice made by their parents that has led to a bad result, they will simply blame their parents rather than introspect themselves.

In conclusion, I can understand that it might have a little risk of becoming selfish, but freedom should be given to children to make decisions on their matters.
