Some people believe that corporations have a responsibility to promote the well-being of the societies and environments in which they operate. Others believe that the only responsibility of corporations, provided they operate within the law, is to make as much money as possible.

Corning the responsibility of the companies, there is no a consensus. Some claim that corporations should help to develop the societies and environments, while others argue that the only goal for a corporation is that they just need to keep the law and make as much profit as possible. In my opinion, most of companies are not a charity organization with the ambition of the funders who aim to sell their products and earn money originally.

For a traditional firm, the first step is to beat its competitors to survive, so not only the funders but also the staff will spare no effort to improve the products, to advertise their products and sell them in a good price. When the company grows up, it means that dozens of or hundreds of even thousands of people need this job to make their life. If the company fail to earn enough money to keep operating, a large number of people have to face the unemployment. Besides, nowadays the world is going to work together more closely than ever before. Any of a corporation in the support chain closing down will lead to a great shake for the industry. So the most important task for a company is to make as much money as possible to ensure surviving, otherwise, for a small company it brings a broken dream for the funders and unemployment for the rest; for a big company, it may lead to a social problem such as pressure for the labor market, a disaster for the relevant industry.

But as the number of the rich people growing, as well as their wealth, the rich begin to donate a large part of their money to build up some companies for solving global problems. For example, Bill Gates has founded a company to study the recycled water which is distilled from such as our urine or other wasted water to resolve the shortage of water resources. The most difference between these companies and those companies mentioned above is that they are supported by a strong capital by the rich whose goal is contributing their wealth back to the society. So these companies do not need to worry about competing with the rivals and their responsibility is to achieve their patrons’ dreams which is promoting the societies and environments.

In conclusion, corporations can be regarded as a group of people who own the same dreams. Some are struggling with survival; some are motivated by their interest; and some are trying to help the world better. In terms of a common corporation, only after making sufficient money, can the funders achieve their original goal and the staff stay in the occupation for a long to make their life. But for those corporations born with large scale of wealth or those successful corporations, they have earn enough from the society and it is their responsibility to develop the societies and environments.
