Recently the way that people get information and the news has become news itself with the
rise of ‘fake news’ and as increasingly people have begun to use alternative information
sources. One argument in favour of newspapers, as the premier way to obtain the latest
information, is that they have more influence than others sources. However as the world turns
digital I would argue that the newspaper is no longer the best way to stay ‘up to date’.
Traditional print media such as newspapers in the past have been the primary way that
individuals have kept abreast of current affairs. Individuals across the country utilised the
daily newspapers for information content and analysis. They were trusted sources and were
influential compared to alternatives like ‘word of mouth’ or fledgling forms of alternative
media.
However it is clear to see that nowadays we are moving beyond the age of the newspaper as
other forms of media become more convenient, user-friendly and reliable. One example
would be twitter, allows for anyone, anywhere to be a reporter and ‘tweet’ information or
their own opinion. Twitter allows individuals to immediately be exposed to a wide array of
information and commentary from across the spectrum.
For those perhaps looking for more reliable sources of information, news websites, blogs and
indeed 24-hour news channels on television offer a source of information that is both
constantly being updated and accessible from anywhere. For those who do not wish to be a
subscriber to a daily periodical which involves high financial costs and a time commitment,
these now represent an excellent midway point providing the benefits of the digital age,
whilst mitigating the risks of unverified sources.
