TOPIC: Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Some people hold the view that parents are responsible for their children’s personality, while others believe that school is the place to acquire it. There is no doubt that a person’s personality is primarily related to his family environment. Nevertheless, parents do not determine one’s qualities or characteristics.

On the one hand, at the time when we begin to inspect the value of the world, our parents’ education, for the most part, plays a great role. But as we grow older, our lives gradually grow apart from our family, so our parents’ views can no longer oblige our opinions.  We need to cultivate our own judgments, right or wrong, and those depend a lot on the people we have met, the world we have seen, and the books we have read. In fact, the definition of ‘good’ in each era is not identical to that of the previous generation.

On the other hand, schools are not only places place to learn bits of knowledge and skills, but also a pre-society for us to communicate and interact with others. In the course of the process, we reshape our understanding of the world through interactions and finally form our personality. Actually, the way we communicate with others in the society has already been shaped during school. To name only a few, the ability to construct a harmonious community circle and handle the relationship between the individual and the collective need to be cultivated by school education. Education that is only gained through practice cannot be taught by our parents.

In general, schools exert a more crucial role than parents in terms of educating a child to be a good member of society.
