Some professionals suggest that older people spend more time socialising with others and playing sports to stay healthy, but many retired people have experienced loneliness and a lack of fitness. Why has this happened? What can be done to address this?

It is common to see that many retirees suffer from loneliness and seldom do sports. I think this phenomenon can be attributed to fewer recreational facilities and a lack of family connection.

Crowded cities cannot offer enough area to the elderly so that they cannot hang out and play sports during their leisure time. The growing population imposes a burden on many cities, leading to more residential buildings. It means that some recreational facilities where old people could spend their spare time free of charge in the past have to be replaced. Without free facilities, most of them may choose to stay at home all day long, leading to many medical issues.

Another reason is that nowadays the youth normally live away from their parents,. In order to earn a decent living, many young people now tend to work in metropolises despite the long distance from their parents. In that case, they cannot communicate face-to-face every day, leading to a sense of loneliness. Besides, without young family members who know more about how to lead a wholesome lifestyle, parents cannot be urged to keep fit.

Two measures can be taken by the government to solve this problem. First, advertising campaigns should be launched to deepen the public understanding of this problem, in particular the young generation. In this way, they will pay more attention to their parents’ mental and physical conditions. Moreover, the community can increase the expenditure on recreational infrastructure to inspire retirees to stay physically and socially active.

Few leisure facilities and week bonding with children are main causes. The government can invest more and promote public awareness to mitigate this problem.
