Some think that “vertical cities‘’ where people live and work in tall buildings are better. Others however believe that “horizontal cities” where there are few tall buildings are better. Discuss both these views and give your own opinions.

With the development of urbanlization, more and more high buildings are built. However, People have different views about whether to live and work in high buildings.

Comparing with the shorter buildings constructing high buildings costs less land. Therefore, we can make a better city planning such as building more gardens and adapating transportations. This not only improves the diversity of the city but also contributes to dwellers’ convenience. Moreover, these buildings can contain more people simultaneously and enlarge the capacity of residents. As a matter of fact that people tend to find jobs in big cities because of their thriving economy, so these tall buildings make it possible to allow an increasing number of people flocking to big cities.

However, there are also some negative aspects living and working in tall buildings. One disadvantage is that it is not easy for people to escape when accidents happen especially for those who live in high levels. For example, we can quickly dash outside when earthquake occurs if we live in short buildings. In addition, it is relatively easier and more convenient to maintain short buildings. Because of the low height only some simple tools like ladders need to be used to fix such constructions and maintainer’s safety can also be guaranteed. By contrast it may be a big project to repair high buildings.

As far as I am concerned, I believe that more high-rise buildings will bring much convenience to cites. However, we can not ignore the safety problem of these building and thus the height should be under well controlled.
