We have been educated by our parents and teachers that telling the truth is one of the virtues. To some people, telling the truth is equal to being honest, and being honest is the requisite of being a good person. In my view, however, it is necessary to say a lie which would not hurt other people.

To begin with, why many of us feel that being an honest person must tell the truth without considering the situation? Actually, we always exaggerate the importance of speaking real things. It is widely acknowledged that sometimes we have to hide the truth to reach a better consequence. For instance, when a girl asks you whether she is pretty or not, it is sensible to praise her instead of telling the real thought in your heart. It is a polite behavior instead of cheating, just as the behavior that saying something good when we meet a new friend.

Let us think about the reason that why parents and teachers emphasize the importance of telling the truth. From my perspective, the purpose of them is educating us to be upright. No matter if the truth has a negative influence on us, we should face the truth straightly rather than hide it. In addition, considering goodness is one of the virtues in traditional Chinese culture, we should take care of other’s feeling at the same time. Accepting the truth is not as easy as we usually think.

In a nutshell, in our daily life, making decisions after considering deeply is sensible. We cannot curtly give a definition without considering the situation. However, no matter what decision you would like to make, the requisite is do not hurt others.
