In this day and age, there has been much discussion revolving around the importance of sports and social activities at universities and colleges. Some people who want to change the inferior status quo of those activities suggest that we should give them as much financial support as we give to classes and libraries. Nevertheless, I’m more inclined to oppose that and still think we academic activities always weigh more.

Admittedly, sports and social activities are of great significance at universities. Students should participate a series of those activities to obtain comprehensive development which surely benefits their future social life. However, that doesn’t mean that we should buttress those activities to such a large extent. If we did so, classes and libraries would receive less financial support because of the limitation of  the asset of those universities, which would be detrimental to the development of academics at universities. Besides, an atmosphere of society at universities because of that policy would absolutely have a negative effect on students’ university life.

To begin with, we must make it clear  that the prior role of a university is nothing but a research institute. Therefore, most of the activities led by universities must surround academics. For instance, if we compare basketball achivements of the universities in America, we will notice that some renowned universities such as Harvard, Stanford and Yale don’t be acknowledged in the basketball area. But everyone still regard them rather than those basketball advantageous universities as distinguished universities because of their honorable academics reputation.

Furthermore, for the students, the first and foremost tasks they must achieve at universities are  study work but not sports and social activities. Only by making study their priority but not those social and sports activities can they have a bright future. Most companies tend to employ those intelligent and skillful studenfs but not those athletes after all.

Overall, we need to emphasize sports and social activities and give them relative support but more attention must be paid to classes and research.
