TOEFL Writing Topic: Students in a university club want to help others, but they can only choose one project a year, which one of the following is the best? 1. Help those students in a nearby primary school with reading and mathematics; 2. Help people who cannot afford to build or rent a home to build a house; 3. Visit and assist elderly people with daily tasks.

Out of the three projects that this club can choose, I suppose the best idea is to help those students in a nearby primary school with reading and mathematics for the following reasons.

First, helping the primary school students with reading and mathematics can broaden the horizon of the primary students. The knowledge learnt from primary school is limited, but university students can give these primary students a chance to learn something new. For example, my little sister attended a learning club when she was in primary school. She went there on weekends, learning to read famous pieces of literature and studying mathematics, many of which were from middle school’s courses. Thus, she acquired the knowledge in advance and performed very well when she went to middle school, without any trouble of fitting in. Therefore, helps from university students benefit the primary students’ study.

Besides, university students can learn to be patient when they are teaching primary students. Many university students lack patience; they give up once they find the goal is taxing. However, to teach primary students needs patience. Because primary school are unlikely to understand the knowledge at once, patient repeating is required. In this case, university students can have good training to be patient by helping primary school students. Therefore, helping those students in a nearby primary school is an advisable choice.

Admittedly, people who cannot afford to build or rent a home and elderly people also need help. However, the government already has funding to support homeless people and the old. Plus, to build a house for homeless people is not affordable for university students because students do not have any job to get money, either. Assisting old people requires everyday works, which is also unrealistic for university students with a massive study load. Thus, the best project is to help those students in a nearby primary school with reading and mathematics.
