Topic: “The arts (painting, music, literature) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.”
The arts, in all its dominant forms, engages us as an uplifting experience. Whether painting, playing music, or devouring literature, man has learned to escape from the hectic pace of everyday life by connecting with the arts, not only as a means of entertainment, but also as a therapeutic tool. From an early age, indeed even before school, we are encouraged to develop a curiosity for the arts. All in all, art is a form of communication, which can tell a story, relay an emotion, reveal the unseen, portray the seen in a unique way.
In the first instance, music is perhaps the most popular art form. Music is defined as the form of art whose medium is sound, and is commonly known as the art which moves the soul. Music brings happiness to people, it calms people, and can even be used to correct neurological complications. Most notably, music is now used in hospitals to ease pain during labour, or surgery. However, music is most popularly used for entertainment. Here people react to it by dancing or singing alongside. Music heals the soul and makes people forget their worries. Also, music can be used to remind people of the past, or worries. Here we say music reminds people of memories, both good or bad. Particular songs are attributed to special moments or experiences in someone’s life.
Whereas music is the medium of sound, painting is the most significant visual art, which is best known for communicating a message to the viewer. The message communicated then affects how people think, or how people feel. For another thing, artists find relaxation and stimulation from painting, and their works often fascinate and captivate the viewer. Equally important, literature has played a vital role in the development of society. From the days of Shakespeare, the written word, either in narrative or poetic form, has contributed to the rich fabric of Western culture, and has often acted as the stimulus for revealing those otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of mankind.
In summary, the various art forms which attract us have been, and remain treasured during our lifetimes. Clearly, the tranquil and enchanting role of the arts in society cannot be underestimated.
