The best way to teach is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones

The way of teaching is a complex topic to discuss. Every culture and every family has its own way to teach. There is no best way to teach, as an old Chinese saying, “teaching depends on the characteristic of the person who is learning”.

Praising positive actions and ignoring negative ones is one of the good way to teach. It helps children build their own growing path. They are encouraged and allowed to do what they like and what they are good at, without getting too much interaction from the elders. Many classical Asian parents, on the contrary, force their children to study hard in school and forbid them doing entertaining activities. Because they teach their kids depending on their own life experience. They expect their kids to have a “proper job” for their future profession, such as engineer, banker, lawyer, doctor, which can make a good living. While, the good living reckoned by the parents may not be the happy life for the children. Parents should not be the deciders but instead the advisors and supporters of their children. Even children fall down by a mistake, they should stand up and learn from the experience.

However, not all the negative actions can be ignored. Teachers and parents still need to teach children the standard ethical criteria. Children should know that that they cannot steal from the others or bully the others. Otherwise, they would end up in jail when they grow up. Everyone has their evil part inside and may do bad things. Thus, they should keep in mind where is the line they cannot cross. This is also the reason why we have law in the society.

In conclusion, there is no best way of teaching, but the better way. Teachers and parents should praise children doing positive actions and let them learn from the negative ones, but also prevent them doing the unforgivable ones.
