Claim: the best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and the women that the society chooses as its heroes or its role models. Reason: Heroes and role models reveal a society’s highest ideals.

The claim assumes that the character of heroes in a society can represent the character of it because heroes show the hope of citizens. I partly agree with this view for the following reasons.

The character of a society can indeed be known by heroes or its role models. On the one hand, we can know the universal value of a society, such as three presidents in the United States. Washington represents a society’s respect for the rights of individuals; Lincoln represents freedom and equality in American society; Roosevelt represents a society’s sense of justice and passion for work. And these are exactly the different characters in different periods of American society. We can know social values at different times by the heroes respected by people then. For example, XXX was regarded as a hero in the Anti-Japanese War, which reflects people’s patriotism at that time.

On the other hand, these heroes can reflect society’s trends and intentions, but they could only reflect the ideal state of it. In general, heroes are exaggerated by the media, and their defects are usually overlooked. So the heroes are always a little unrealistic and represent the hope of the government. For example, Lei Feng, a role model in China, is famous for his warm heart and selflessness. He was regarded as a model citizen and the masses were encouraged to emulate his characters. Although Lei represents the hope of the government to propaganda its moral ideal, it is unrealistic to require people to behave like Lei in real life. Therefore, considering the society at that time as selflessness just based on the popularity of Lei Feng is unjustified. Besides, many role models publicized by the government may only show the spirit of authority instead of the masses. In this case, although it seems that this kind of hero is famous among people, it may not reflect the whole society’s view correctly.

Overall, it is one-sided to know a society just through the character of heroes in it, because it is difficult to mirror the whole character of it. There are more reliable methods to understand the character of a society, such as doing social fieldwork after classifying the population into different groups. For example, investigating the views of different classes of people towards a certain trait of heroes can help know thoroughly about the component of a society’s value. Also, researching a society cannot ignore the cultural and historical backgrounds of a nation. So it is necessary to study the changes in cultural identity among people to help know a society deeply.
