The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a local newspaper. “Five years ago, we residents of Morganton voted to keep the publicly owned piece of land known as Scott Woods in a natural, undeveloped state. Our thinking was that, if no shopping centers or houses were built there, Scott Woo.

As the author stated, build a school in Morganton is the best way for using the land in their community. However, there are some questions needed to be answered to make the argument more convincing.

First of all, the author said that the town wants to purchase the land and build a school there and it can prevent shopping mall to be built there, however, how large will the school be? The author didn’t cite any effectively evidence to proof that it would be impossible to build a shopping center if the potential school be built. If the school only take a little part of land, obviously, shopping center and house will have high possibility to establish since everyone wants to live closer the school. The author just drew the conclusion in purely guess.

Another question about the argument is that why the author can determine that the substantial acreage would probably be devoted to athletic fields? That is an intuitive implication that the land should be “used”. It’s possible that the mayor of the town wants to develop the science in the town and recommend all the school should have their own laboratories or the residences there think that there are too many athletic fields in the community and they want to establish a library.

Moreover, the residences there have agreed to keep the land undeveloped five years ago. But now author state the athletic field should be built. Are there any important factors, since build an athletic field there might be concerned five years ago, will emerge to make the residences return their mind? Even if they didn’t concern about this established way, what percentage of the residences will agree with this new proposal? A survey about whether to agree to build a school with athletic field there should be made. Until getting the result of the survey, we can’t make any objective decision.

The author should answer all the questions above to make the argument convincible.
