The unrestrained increase in the volume of international trade indicates that countries and economies are interconnected. Since the 21st century, globalization of trade has become a debatable issue. Although some people believe that the international flow of goods will trigger enormous impediment for local industries, I am firmly convinced that it is an indispensable process to elevate the economic rate.

On the one hand, cross-border trade stimulates economic growth. With the development of globalization and technological innovation, liberalization of international trade is gradually considered as a necessity for the international market. Firstly, fierce business competition benefits consumers. When imports impact local industries, native producers will manufacture reliable products with low prices. Moreover, diversified commodities will improve their living standards. The products which are not sold in the local market will be available and affordable. For instance, under the promotion of international free trade, Chinese residents can enjoy authentic Japanese sushi, Brazilian beef and British desserts. Secondly, global trade optimizes resource allocation. It is an irrefutable fact that each region produces something of value to the world economy, exactly as the Middle East exports energy, and the EU provides luxury items. Therefore, global trade plays an increasingly important role in strengthening international cooperation and preventing wars.

On the other hand, protectionists claim that across national boundaries and the transnational corporations are driven by profit. International free trade is a gambling for a nation to do. If the domestic industries fail to excel the international brands, the import commodities will dominate the local market. Furthermore, the impact of the world market on local culture is also noteworthy. Especially in some developing countries, traditional values have been diluted in the process of economic globalization. Therefore, some people harbor the idea that international trade will lead to homogenization.

In conclusion, while there are convincing arguments on both sides of the debate, a return to protectionist policies would be a mistake. The advantages of free trade outweigh the disadvantages. It is no longer realistic for any nation to maintain a self-supporting and self-sufficient economy.
