The line graph compares the percentage of citizens aged 65 or more in Japan, Sweden and USA, over a period of 100 years.

It is clear that the proportion of elderly people in the three countries all saw a rise in the period. Although the figure for Japan is much lower than the figures of other two countries from 1940 to 2020, it is estimated that Japan will overtake USA and Sweden in 2040.

In 1940, nearly 10% of population in USA aged no less than 65, compared with 7.5% in Sweden and 5% in Japan. While the group of the elderly in Sweden and USA expanded a lot in the century, the percentage of Japanese elderly population remained relatively stable before 2000.

However, the figure for Japan started to rise rapidly at the beginning of 21st century, and according to prediction, will jump to about 27% by 2040, followed by 25% in Sweden and 23% in USA.
